The island of Sicily is the biggest vine-growing region of Italy. The best known and popular red grape variety is Nero d’Avola, which is cultivated all over Sicily and is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. The most important white grape variety is Catarratto. The vines prosper predominately on volcanic soil with hot and dry climate. Due to its favorable stable climate and terroir, Sicily has optimal conditions for organic grape farming.
